Neighborhood Safety Workshop for East & Downtown Set for Sept. 17, 2019

Posted: 09/09/2019
The City will hold a Neighborhood Safety Workshop on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 6 p.m. at Beck Cultural Exchange Center at 1927 Dandridge Ave.

The next Neighborhood Safety Workshop will provide residents of East Knoxville and downtown neighborhoods with tips on working with City departments to make their neighborhoods safer.

This is the third of four workshops – collaborations between the Office of Neighborhoods, Police Advisory & Review Committee (PARC) and the Knoxville Police Department – designed to inform residents about neighborhood-specific crime statistics (available online via the LexisNexus Community Crime Map), safety habits that residents can put into practice, and City resources to help neighbors report and respond to crime.

“These conversations are important for residents of all Knoxville neighborhoods to have,” said PARC Executive Director Clarence Vaughn. “As we’ve prepared crime-related statistics for these workshops, we’ve found that the types of crimes and when they take place are the same across the city.” Top crimes are theft, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft.

Workshop presenters – including Vaughn, KPD Neighborhood Watch Officer John Morgan, KPD Lt. Brian Bush, and Office of Neighborhoods Coordinator Debbie Sharp and Assistant Neighborhoods Coordinator Eden Slater – will present crime statistics for East Knoxville neighborhoods as well as the Central Business Improvement District (CBID). In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to report safety concerns and ask questions about their specific areas.

The final workshop in the series will highlight statistics and issues in West Knoxville neighborhoods at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2019 at Arnstein Jewish Community Center, 6800 Deane Hill Drive.

Registration for workshops is not required, but guests may RSVP to the events posted at www.facebook.com/knoxvilleneighborhoods.

Anyone needing a disability accommodation to attend a meeting should contact the City’s ADA Coordinator, Stephanie Cook, at [email protected] or 865-215-2034. To request an English interpreter, contact Title VI Coordinator Tatia M. Harris at 865-215-2831.
