The City of Knoxville has one official skateboarding facility in Tyson Park, and will soon begin construction on another in Fountain City. Except where specified otherwise, skateboarding is permitted on all City of Knoxville greenways.
In Spring 2008, the City passed a helmet ordinance requiring all skateboarders, in-line skaters, bikers, and bladers to wear a helmet. A violation of this ordinance will result in a $100 ticket.
Knoxville Skatepark
In 2008, the City of Knoxville (in partnership with Knox County) opened the City's first skatepark in Tyson Park. A group that labeled themselves the "Skate Board" raised dollars and support to encourage the City and County to build a skatepark.
The facility is a Tony Hawk Foundation skatepark with a plaza area, a bank pool, a flow pool, and a peanut pool.
The Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association named the Knoxville Skatepark the "Best New Facility" in Tennessee for 2008. Phase II of the skatepark is in the fundraising stages and is planned to have a flat plaza, a beginners bowl, street obstacles, and a spectator's venue. Fountain City Skatepark
Crews will break ground this summer on this new park at the corner of Knox Road and Maple Dr. in Fountain City. The centerpiece of the plaza will be a two-level, 7,200 square-foot paved area primarily for skateboarding. To learn more, please visit the Fountain City Skatepark web site. |
