Danny Mayfield Park History
Danny Mayfield served on the City Council from 1998-2001. He passed away while in office on March 21, 2001, at the age of 32 after a battle with cancer. Originally from New Jersey, Mayfield lived in Knoxville 12 years. He arrived in Knoxville in 1989 as an 18 year old freshman at Knoxville College. Described as full of hope and brimming with contagious enthusiasm, Mayfield quickly emerged as a leader at both the traditionally black college and in the community. He co-founded TRIBE ONE with Chris Woodhull. This inner city Christian ministry that encourages at-risk youth to walk away from gangs and destructive lifestyles and lead productive lives. Mayfield always wanted a park across from Maynard School, where he would to read to children.
