The Knoxville Police Department in cooperation with The American Crime Prevention Institute will present a Church Crime Prevention Seminar on September 22, 2008 at the Powell United Methodist Church at 323 West Emory Road, Powell, Tennessee 37849. Hours for the seminar are 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and cost is $75.00 per participant.

Course Description

In recent years, churches and church congregations have become increasingly vulnerable to criminal victimization. Because they have numerous valuable assets and property, churches are frequently burglarized and are the victims of theft. Criminals often view churches as vulnerable and easy targets.

The Church Crime Prevention Seminar is designed for both law enforcement officers and church administrators, ministers and leaders. Participants in this one-day seminar will learn how to evaluate internal and external risks associated with houses of worship. They will also learn how to develop a comprehensive church security plan.

The seminar will demonstrate how to protect the physical assets of the church by the use of a proactive church security survey and the development of cost effective security awareness policies and procedures.

The Church Crime Prevention Seminar will also focus upon the protection of church’s financial assets. Robbery, theft, fraud and embezzlement will be discussed and strategies to avoid victimization offered.

An additional focus of the seminar will be the protection of the church’s most valuable asset, its children and youth. This timely topic will highlight proven strategies for protecting those most vulnerable from an array of potential areas of risk.

The final part of the seminar shifts from potential criminal threats to the development of proactive crime prevention strategies churches can implement to protect themselves from criminal occurrences. These strategies include the development of a Church Protection Committee, a Church Safety Team and a Church Watch Program.

Each seminar participant will receive a copy of the American Crime Prevention Institute’s “Emergency Survival Guide for Churches” and a detailed seminar workbook.

For a complete summary of seminar topics, log onto the American Crime Prevention Institute’s website at www.acpionline.com.

Law enforcement officers are encouraged to invite church administrators, ministers and leaders from churches in their communities, as well as their personal congregations, to attend and participate in the Church Crime Prevention Seminar. Participation in this seminar by both law enforcement officers and church leaders will represent a unique opportunity to collectively address the problems and issues associated with church security. It will also represent a proactive initiative to minimize or mitigate the risks experienced by houses of worship.
