FIRE CODES & INSPECTIONS

Headed by the City's Fire Marshal, this office performs all of the following services:

  • Enforces all state and local codes involving fire safety and prevention,
  • Reviews all plans, performs inspections for all new construction and remodeling of buildings, except one- and two-family dwellings,
  • Conducts annual inspection of existing public, commercial, and residential buildings (more than two units),
  • Performs one- and two-family dwellings upon request,
  • Inspects new and existing above ground storage tanks,
  • Inspects the installation and removal of underground storage tanks,
  • Inspect the installation of liquefied petroleum gas tanks,
  • Monitors blasting operations,
  • Monitors indoor and outdoor fireworks displays,
  • Monitors special events for cooking, tents and large public gatherings.

    What is the City Fire Code?

    The City of Knoxville has adopted the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, 2006 edition; NFPA 1 Uniform Fire Code, 2006 edition.

    What Buildings Are Affected by the Fire Code?

    The code applies to all commercial and industrial buildings, and all residential buildings. All building plans are reviewed for compliance with the NFPA and all construction must be inspected and approved.

    How Do I File a Complaint About a Fire Hazard?

    Call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 865-215-2283 to complain about possible fire hazards. All complaints are investigated by a fire inspector.

    What About Special Events?

    Fire inspectors check buildings and areas used in public events both before and after each event. Special attention is paid to aisles, exits, vending booths and tents. All fire suppression systems and alarms are also tested and checked
