Greenways are corridors of protected open space managed for land and water conservation and recreation.

Greenways often follow natural land or water features, and link nature preserves, parks' cultural features and historic sites with each other and with populated areas. Greenways link neighborhoods to these facilities and to other neighborhoods.

Some greenways are publicly owned (First Creek) and some are privately owned (Fountain City) and some are the result of public/private partnerships (Neyland Greenway and the Will Skelton Greenway at Ijams Nature Center).

There are currently over 41 miles of paved greenway for the citizens of Knoxville.
